Hopes for reopening of schools have been rekindled after the Ministry of Education and Sports announced that a meeting to decide on reopening dates will be agreed on next week.

Following two meetings to discuss reopening of education institutions, President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has ordered Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to convene a meeting to discuss reopening dates next week.

Last week, officials from first lady Janet Museveni’s Ministry of Education and Sports met with those from Dr Jane Ruth Aceng’s Ministry of Health to discuss modalities of reopening.

Days later, on Tuesday, Minister Ms Janet Museveni presented proposals for the reopening of education institutions to the Covid19 National Taskforce.

While the education ministry had proposed October 2021 for reopening, Museveni directed PM Nabbanja to meet with Janet Museveni, Aceng and their officials and recommend dates based on what was agreed in the Tuesday meeting.

Education ministry spokesperson Dr Dennis Mugimba has confirmed next week’s meeting.

“Therefore, a recommendation was made that The Rt. Hon. Prime Minister will convene another meeting with the Minister of Health and Education and the necessary stakeholders on the National Covid19 Task Force to propose the dates when we can open for our learners,” said Dr Mugimba.

“In the meantime, we are going to intensify the campaign for vaccination, and as you have also heard from the ministry of Health, intensifying the vaccination call for the elderly.”
