SANCTIONS CONFIRMED: Joe Biden Announces Travel Ban, Other Sanctions for Museveni Government Officials Over Anti-Homosexuality Law

US President Joe Biden has announced sanctions against Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s government officials over the Anti-Homosexuality Act.

The US State Department has announced that the affected officials have engaged in acts of human rights violations, corruption and undermining democratic processes.

The US government has for many years used sanctions to compel nations to dance to its tunes.

“In response to human rights abuses and corruption in Uganda, the Department of State announces that it is taking steps to impose visa restrictions under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act on Ugandan individuals believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Uganda,” announced Matthew Miller, the US State Department Spokesperson.

“As directed by President Biden, the U.S. government will continue to evaluate additional actions under this policy, as well as the use of other tools at our disposal, to promote accountability for Ugandan officials and other individuals responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Uganda, abusing human rights, including those of LGBTQI+ persons, or engaging in corrupt practices.”

The US has also issued a travel advisory to Uganda, warning that homosexuals might face it rough if they travelled to the East African nation.

“As previewed when the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 was enacted in Uganda at the end of May, the Department has also updated its travel guidance to U.S. citizens to highlight the risk that LGBTQI+ persons, or those perceived to be LGBTQI+, could be prosecuted and subjected to life imprisonment or the death penalty based on provisions in the law.”

On sanctions, already, the US Government has cancelled Speaker Anita Among’s visa over the Anti-Homosexuality Law. (See Details Here).

The US Government had also threatened to stop providing money for buying ARVs for Ugandan HIV/AIDs patients, but MPs insisted on passing the Anti-Homosexuality law, saying ‘if we die we die.’ (Read Stories Here and There).

President Museveni has announced that he is ready for war and has told his ruling NRM MPs what he will do if the US cuts aid over the anti-gays law. (See Details Here and There).
