Salim Saleh: How Muhoozi Saved Me When His Father Museveni Wanted to Throw Me in Prison

FLASHBACK: Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) Chief Coordinator Gen Caleb Akandwanaho aka Salim Saleh has revealed how his nephew Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba saved him from being sent to prison after President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni threatened to send him and other generals to jail for misdeploying the soldiers.

Born in 1960, Gen Salim Saleh is said to have quit schooling at Kako Secondary in Masaka in 1976 to join his brother Museveni’s Tanzania-based Front for National Salvation (Fronasa) at the age of 16.

He would later join the National Resistance Army (NRA) and is credited for commanding the January 1986 final assault on Kampala, paving the way for his brother Gen Museveni to take power. Salim Saleh would become the first commander of the army under Museveni’s government.

Saleh would also later serve as a minister in Museveni’s cabinet and as a presidential advisor on defence and security.

In his work with Gen Museveni, Gen Saleh has revealed that his brother was very bitter with him and other top security officials over the deployment of soldiers. And he expressed his gratitude to Gen Muhoozi for coming to his rescue.

Gen Salim Saleh and Muhoozi’s wife Charlotte Nankunda Kutesa Kainerugaba decorated Museveni’s son as a full general of the UPDF.

Saleh said he was happy because Muhoozi, whom he described as “my friend,” was now at the same rank as him.

Saleh then revealed that Gen Museveni would have sent him to jail had Muhoozi not come up with a brilliant idea that save him.

“Gen Kainerugaba defeated me in one thing. You remember when Mzee [Gen Museveni] almost took us to jail for misdeploying in Gulu,” narrated Gen Saleh.

“It was at this that Gen Muhoozi came in and conceptualised the idea of Special Forces and combined arms operations. Yesterday [during Independence Day Celebrations at Kololo] I saw people skydiving and my heart almost went out completely.”

He added: “We shall also remember you for that contribution of that specialized training which you and your colleagues did after us.”

Previously, Gen Muhoozi revealed that Gen Salim Saleh had told him that the people he killed during war will be in heaven waiting to welcome him to God’s Kingdom. (Read Story Here).

After being fully decorated as a general in the Ugandan army, Muhoozi revealed his next plan. (Read it Here).
