Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) has confirmed another case of child suicide after a nine-year old hanged herself in Matugga.
According to KMP deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, Esther Zalwango, aged nine, reportedly committed suicide at Kiryagonja, Matugga in Wakiso District.
Preliminary findings indicate that Zalwango had been told to wash utensils but wasn’t comfortable doing the chore.
“It is alleged that one Nakiwala Hadijah the grandmother to the deceased told the deceased to wash utensils at around 0900hrs. The deceased picked all the utensils and placed them on the verandah plus the water,” said Owoyesigyire.
“The grandmother went to buy diapers but only to come back with no trace of Esther. As she went to the toilet, she found Esther hanging inside.”
The deceased’s body has been conveyed Mulago city mortuary for postmortem.
“Currently the cause of the alleged suicide is not known as there are a lot of allegations against the grandmother which the police is looking into,” added Owoyesigyire.
This is the third case of suicide committed by a child or teenager in KMP since January 10 when Emmanuel Okello, 18, a Senior Four student of Makerere College School and a son of Moses Opio, a resident of Parliament village-Kitukutwe, Kiwologoma, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, hanged himself because he didn’t want to return to Makerere College and didn’t like the new the new choice of school, St Kizito SS Namugongo as recommended by his father.
Days later, Maureen Nantambi, a six-year-old, committed suicide in a house at Bweyogerere Central Zone, Kira Municipality in Wakiso District because she reportedly didn’t want to go to a village school in Buikwe District.
