SAD! Former Ugandan MP Dead

Former Ugandan MP Francis Gonahasa, who subscribed to the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), has passed on, the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has confirmed.

Gonahasa stood as an independent candidate in the 2021 parliamentary election and lost the Kabweri County (Kibuku District) seat to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate David Stephen Mugole Mauku.

Speaker Anita Among (Bukedea District Woman MP – NRM) described Gonahasa as a dedicated and committed Member of Parliament.

“It is with great sadness that I received the news of the passing on of Hon. Francis Gonahasa, the former MP for Kabweri County. He was a dedicated legislator and Shadow Minister whose commitment will always be remembered. My sincere sympathies to his family, friends and in-laws,” she said.

Her deputy Thomas Tayebwa (Ruhinda North, Mitooma – NRM), described Gonahasa as a father figure to a number of legislators, and one who was passionate about agriculture financing.

“Very sad to learn of the death of Hon. Francis Gonahasa, former Mp Kabweri, Kibuku District. We joined the 10th Parliament together, where he immediately became a father figure to most of us despite the divergent political views,” Tayebwa wrote.

“As a shadow minister for agriculture, he rooted for increased funding of the sector, which he argued is the most realistic way of getting most of our people out of poverty. My condolences go out to the family, friends, and relatives. Rest well, my Senior.”

Buhweju County MP Francis Mwijukye (FDC) said Gonahasa was a vocal MP.

“Sorry for the passing of Hon Gonahasa Francis, former Kabweri County MP. We joined Parliament at the same time and he was a vocal FDC legislator. May his soul rest eternally!”

The FDC is also mourning the death of the wife of its top member Wafula Oguttu, a former Leader of Opposition in Parliament. (See Details Here).
