Veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye is mourning the death of his cousin Abisaaji Karekyezi who visited him in exile in South Africa.
Karekyezi was aged 85.
Besigye described her as an activist and freedom fighter.
“Abisaaji Karekyezi(85), my wonderful cousin, a dear friend and a veteran political activist and freedom fighter has gone to be with the Lord,” wrote Besigye.
“She was a very intelligent, loving, generous, hardworking, fearless and God-loving lady.”
He praised Karekyezi for not abandoning him in exile.
The opposition strongman further paid tribute to Karekyezi’s husband Samwiri for teaching him.
“When I was in exile in South Africa (2001-2005), Abisaaji bought a ticket, packed a lot of foodstuffs and brought them to me, plus US$ 200,” revealed Besigye.
“Her husband, Samwiri Karekyezi, who’s also my uncle from my father’s side, was one of my first teachers in School.”
Besigye didn’t divulge how long Abisaaji had been sick but sharee photos he took with her during a visit to her home in Nyabiteete, Rukungiri in March 2020.
“Abisaaji has been unwell for some years now but remained defiantly active and positive,” continued Besigye.
“We took these pictures from their home in Nyabiteete on 2nd March 2020. They prepared a sumptuous lunch for me and we’d fun.”
He equally praised Karekyezi’s children for looking after their mother.
“I am grateful to their sons and daughters (especially, Peace, Christine, Joy and George), who’ve worked so hard to give their parents quality life in their retirement,” he noted.
“I join all family members, relatives and friends in celebrating the very worthy life of Abisaaji. May the Almighty God reward her with eternal life and keep the family in His embrace.”
