Schools, parents, guardians and students have been left in confusion after two junior (state) ministers under First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni’s education ministry contradicted each other online vacancy applications, admissions and selection for senior one (S1).
Minister Ms Museveni and Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) officials released the 2020 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) results.
But as has always been the case, the education minister didn’t announce dates for the senior one selection dates.
These would be communicated later, said Ms Museveni.
The ministry is in a tough situation since it still has another lot of senior one students yet to be promoted due to Covid19 disruptions on the academic calendar.
With the S1 selection exercise pending, some schools had resorted to online vacancy applications, admissions and selection.
But junior education minister in charge of primary education Dr Joyce Kaducu Moriku said online admissions were illegal. (See: ILLEGAL! Janet Museveni’s Education Ministry Bans Senior One Online Vacancy Applications).
But now, Dr Moriku’s colleague at the ministry, Chrysostom Muyingo, the higher education minister, has said there is nothing wrong with online applications, registration, selection and admissions.
“As long as the ministry has released the results, parents can apply anywhere,” said Minister Muyingo, who is a private school owner, was reported as telling government newspaper The New Vision.
“This is because there are parents who want their children to study from abroad, some will be joining international schools. Therefore, the ministry cannot stop the admissions.”
