By Joseph Masereka

A Rwandan national has been arrested near the Ugandan border with her western neighbour, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Bwera, Kasese District.

Local police said they were investigating the matter under which a Rwandan citizen identified as Ivan Subunga, aged 24, together with three Ugandans were arrested over theft allegations.

The three Ugandans are: Joseph Bukenya, 22; Peter Kisembo Mutoro, 23, and Moris Baluku. It is alleged that Sabunga and others were arrested with sharp objects. They are suspected to have been engaged in robberies, with allegations of their involvement in ending other people’s lives or injuring them still under probe.

The four were arrested on Saturday, July 27, 2024 during operation led by Bwera division police commander, Ramathan Tei during a concert at singer Eddy Kenzo’s music concert in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council.

The Rwenzori East police Community Liaisons officer, who doubles as the Rwenzori East police spokesperson, SP Luke Mbusa, said the victims were also reportedly snatching phones from people.

According to Mbusa, the suspects were moving in a Raum car registration number 448R in which police recovered 22 smartphones.

The suspects have been remanded to Bwera Prison for further investigation. SP Mbusa who further called on those who could have lost their phones to check at Bwera police station with evidence, said so far 12 have been taken by owners.

This reporter also understands that the suspects had reportedly tried to bribe police officers with Shs3m to regain their freedom but officers are said to have rejected the offer and insisted they must answer for their actions in a court of law.

SP Mbusa has urged locals to be vigilant while communicating on their phones during night hours.
