Sections of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) have begun endorsing Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, the country’s president, as their candidate for the 2026 presidential election.

Gen Museveni has ruled Uganda since 1986. Last year, he won a new term in office. By the end of the current term in 2026, he will have led the country for 40 years.

Now, just about two years since the controversial 2021 poll that he won, Museveni has begun receiving endorsements.

Gen Museveni has in previous elections emerged unopposed – as a sole candidate – for his ruling NRM party.

Those endorsing him have often argued that Museveni has done a lot for the country and that he should not be subjected to an internal process since his track record speaks for itself.

Last month, Gen Museveni celebrated his 78th birthday. By the end of his current five-year term, he will be 82 years old.

As expected, if Museveni wins another term, he will be 87 by the time it ends in 2031. It is not clear if he will seek another five-year term in 2031, running until 2036, by which time he would be 92 years old and will have ruled Uganda for a cool 50 years.

For now, the focus is on the year 2026.

A group of top NRM and government officials led bybVice President Jessica Alupo appended their signature on an endorsement board in the district of Mitooma.

VP Alupo, Internal Affairs Minister Maj Gen (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire, Defende and Veteran Affairs Minister Vincent Bamungaki Sempijja, Minister Francis Mwebesa and local leaders endorsed Museveni’s 2026 sole candidature.

The endorsement board was prepared by youth in Mitooma and was signed at an event to mark the International Youth Day in the district.

The event happened at Bubangizi Secondary School playground. The celebration was themed: ‘Unleashing the potential and role of youth in nation development.’

The youth endorsed Museveni as the NRM’s sole candidate and assured the ministers that they wiuld support the general from Rwakitura in 2026.

VP Alupo told the youth that the issue of Museveni’s sole candidature will be presented before the NRM’s  Central Executive Committee (CEC) for consideration.

Gen Museveni has not yet confirmed if he will run for president in 2026.

Meanwhile,. Prophet who accurately predicted William Ruto’s victory has revealed Uganda’s next president after Museveni. (See detas Here).
