Yona (Yonasani) Kanyomozi, a former minister in President Milton Obote’s government and a staunch member of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), has died today, August 28, 2022.
Kanyomozi was aged 82 and had celebrated his last birthday on earth weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Ugandans, including those from the political opposition, have been paying tribute to Kanyomozi.
“I send our sympathies to the family and friends of the Hon Yona Kanyomozi who served our great Country as MP and Minister. May the Lord comfort his loved ones and grant Mzee’s Soul eternal rest!” wrote speaker of parliament Anita Annet Among.
“Rest in peace, Mzee Yona Kanyomozi. Thank you for your commitment to Uganda all these years, and the words of wisdom you have consistently shared with us. It’s very sad you’ve passed on at a time when our nation is in dire need of forthright elders like you. Fare thee well,” wrote National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya.
Asuman Basalirwa’s Justice Forum (Jeema) party wrote: “We have learnt the passing on of Hon. Yona Kanyomozi. It’s sad that the country is losing such humble and talented leaders. Condolence to [UPC] and Family. May his soul rest in peace.”
The former Bushenyi South MP and ex-minister of cooperatives and marketing had been admitted at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala where he was pronounced dead.
Regarding the cause of death, family members have been quoted as saying that Kanyomozi, a UPC stalwart in Ankole sub-region, had been sick in recent weeks and that he had frequently been in hospital as doctors tried to save his life.
Kanyomozi is said to have been suffering from cancer in his old age years. Complications from cancer and its management are said to have worsened the veteran politician’s health, finally ending his life on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the official vigil for another former minister Gen Elly Tumwine happened at his home in Nakasero on Sunday following the release of the official burial program. (Read Story Here).
