R.I.P: Former Police Boss Dead

Former Uganda Police Force (UPF) Director of Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) John Chris Bakiza has passed on.

Retired Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Bakiza breathed last at the Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala where he had been admitted. He was pronounced dead on the night of Friday, November 03.

Former spokesperson of Uganda Police AIGP Asan Kasingye wrote: “It is so sad to hear about the passing on of SACP (Rtd) John Bakiza, former director Ops and CID.”

AIGP Kasingye recalled that SACP Bakiza had attended the launch of his book in July 2023. He praised him for his humility “amidst troubled times.”

Bakiza was a lawyer and a legal scholar. He joined police in 1980 as a graduate cadet. His batch had only 26 joining graduate cadets. He served as the CID officer in charge of Bank of Uganda for a period of three years until 1990.

He was then promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police. He held the position of Director of Uganda Police Legal Services. He would hold other positions – director of administration and finance, and later director of operations between 1992 and 1996 – before being assigned the rold of CID Director in 1997.

At the turn of the millennium, Bakiza retired. An advocate of the High Court of Uganda, Bakiza retired into private legal practice at his Bakiza and Company Advocates.

He also previously taught at the Law Development Centre as a lecturer.
