Finance Minister Matia Kasaija says that government is confident that each family in Uganda will be earning Shs20m by the time President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s current term ends in 2026.
Kasaija has now advised Ugandans to stop giving excuses but to instead have a positive mindset, tap into government programs such as the Parish Development Model, and jump out of poverty.
“We need a change of mindset. Don’t use rising prices as excuses. I hope everyone here is going to chase poverty from their homes. Every year, we hope you make Shs20m,” said Kasaija during the Harvest Money Expo at Kololo in Kampala on March 19.
“If you remain in poverty, I will abuse you. We should concentrate on developing our homes. If anyone remains broke, we need to cane them.”
He said the money for the Parish Development Model is available, and that as finance minister, he will make sure that it is released.
“Every parish, I will be giving sh17m this financial year. However, starting next financial year, I will give every parish sh100m,” he assured participants at the expo.
“Money shouldn’t be the problem. I am going to release the money. Leave that to me. I want you to have passion. Farming is done with passion.”
He even had a proposal for some Ugandans on how to rear goats and earn Shs20m.
“When you start with two goats, after three years, they will have multiplied. You will be able to get Shs20m,” he advised.
“Goats will put you out of poverty. We want by the time we finish this term; we want every family to have Shs20m.”
