POLITICAL ASSASSINATIONS: Museveni Speaks on Claims that NRM Government Kills Opponents

27

President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni used his August 14 state of security address to assure Ugandans his government doesn’t kill its opponents by poisoning or other means.

President Museveni waxed lyrical about the need to respect human rights.

He noted that his government doesn’t seek vengeance but rather believes in converting opponents to NRM disciples.

“Our human rights record is incomparable to any other in the world. The NRM doesn’t believe in revenge,” said the president.

“If we stick to principles, no one will oppose us forever because we are right. That’s why you see opposition politicians crossing to our side.”

The former bush warlord, whose liberation struggle left behind hundreds of thousands of dead bodies, also talked of political means to deal with opposition.

He added that his NRM government had the capacity to counter opposition propaganda and legitimate arguments.

“We fight all the people who oppose us politically. And we have always defeated them politically,” continued Uganda’s longest serving president.

“We don’t believe in assassinations of opponents. Why should I kill them? By killing him, it means his argument is so powerful, and I have no option but to do away with him.”

He further talked of how he had save Tito Okello Lutwa and opposed any plans to kill Amin and Obote.

“We even didn’t want to kill Amin or Obote; at one time, I saved Tito Okello from being killed here at the Nile Mansions.”
