Police recovers Shs50m from guards who robbed city gold dealer at gunpoint

Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) say they have have arrested two security guards who robbed Shs100m from a Kampala gold dealer.

Alex Abok and Anthony Ayor, attached to Tight Security Company Limited, were guarding businessman Kunal Sethi, 35, at his workplace in Kamwokya, Central Division, Capital city suburb.

But Police say the duo turned against Sethi who dealt in the lucrative gold business, put him on gunpoint and robbed him clean at his Kamwokya office on July 09.

With Shs100m in their hands, KMP deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said, Abok and Ayor went into hiding for 10 days.

Operatives finally nabbed them at a hotel in Kaabong District where they were hiding, added Owoyesigyire.

Police brought the suspects from Kaboong District in Karamoja region to Jinja Road Police Station in the capital Kampala.

“Using our technical teams and intelligence units, police were able to locate the suspects in the Karamoja region where they were arrested,” the police publicist revealed.

Police recovered part of the money Abok and Ayor had stolen from Sethi. Owoyesigyire said the Shs50m would now be used an an exhibit for prosecution of the two guards.

They will face aggravated robbery charges.

“The suspects’ criminal files are being processed and they will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions very soon,” Owoyesigyire said.

Police condemned “acts of private security guards turning their guns at clients, whom they are supposed to protect.”

“We urge private security companies to be very vigilant in the recruitment of their guards to ensure that people with criminal behaviours aren’t employed,” he appealed.

“We thank the police teams that spent sleepless nights until the suspects, who were always on the move, were arrested.”
