Uganda Police Force (UPF) has dismissed reports that over 30 people drowned at Nile Discovery Beach in Njeru, Jinja as they tried to avoid security personnel who had come to arrest them for flouting Covid19 standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Social media reports had claimed that a police operation at Nile Discovery Beach had caught many revelers unawares as security enforced restrictions meant to prevent the spread of Covid19.
That some had, in a desperate attempt to dodge the officers, dived into the Nile.
Reports had also suggested that bad weather had made caused the drowning of over 30 people, with 17 bodies reportedly retrieved.
But UPF has, through its Sezibwa regional spokesperson Hellen Butoto, dismissed these social media reports as fake news.
“Kindly disregard information circulating on social media platforms, that over 30 people died at Nile Discovery, in Njeru. This is false and deserves no attention,” said Butoto.
