PLE 2023 Results Out: 88,269 Candidates FAILED Exams & Can’t Join Senior One; Districts With Most Failures Named

A total of 88,269 candidates have failed their Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE),  results released by the Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) indicate.

At least 749,347 candidates registered to sit PLE examinations in 2023. But results indicate that 88,269 of these are in Grade U (ungraded).

The failure rate is at 10.4 per cent. This means that one out of every 10 candidates failed.

According to Uneb executive secretary and director (ED Dan Odongo), candidates who scored Grade U failed and cannot proceed to the next level.

“A higher proportion of the 2023 candidates passed in Division 3 and above level. Overall, the performance of candidates is comparable to that of 2022,” said Odongo as he released the results at State House Nakasero in Kampala on January 25, 2024.

“Division U (Ungraded) is awarded to candidates who have failed to reach the minimum level of performance that can be awarded at least a Division 4. They are not eligible for admission to the Senior One class.”

Odongo expressed concern that the number of students who have scored Grade U and therefore failed is a matter of concern.”

“It should be noted that the number of candidates in Division U is quite high, at 88,269 (10.4%) and should raise concern so that they do not just add to the statistics of school drop-outs,” he said.

Odongo revealed districts with higher failure rates, where the rates are higher than the national average.

“There are districts such as Kibuku (31.5%), Madi Okollo (31.5%), Dokolo (28.9%), Kween (28.4%), Namisindwa (28.9%) where the percentages are well above the national average,” Odongo noted.

“Many other districts have over 20% of the candidates in Division U. It is necessary to find out the causes and address them.”
