Ugandan athlete Peruth Chemutai has won the 3000m women steeplechase at the Tokyo Olympics.
Chemutai, 22, beat off competition from American Frerichs and Hyvin Kiyeng of Kenya who took bronze.
Chemutai’s gold is not only the country’s first but it also makes her the first Ugandan woman to win gold in any Olympics event.
She also becomes the third Ugandan to win an Olympic event and gold at any Olympics event.
The others who have previously made history in winning gold at the Olympics are: John Akibua and Stephen Kiprotich.
“Congratulations Peruth Chemutai upon winning a gold medal for Uganda in the 3000m steeplechase. We are so proud of you,” said first lady and education and sports minister Janet Museveni.
“I also congratulate Winnie Nanyondo upon qualifying to the next level in the 1500m race. We are praying for you and your colleagues to excel in all the races.”
