Uganda Police Force (UPF) is probing circumstances under which unknown assailants attacked House of Prayer Ministries International (HPMI) lead pastor Aloysius Bujjingo and shot at his vehicle, killing his bodyguard Richard Muhumuza.
The attack happened on January 02 at about 9pm, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire.
The attack happened at Namungona in Kampala. The assailants managed to flee the scene on a motorcycle.
“The Old Kampala Police are currently conducting a comprehensive investigation into a tragic incident involving the attempted murder of Pastor Aloysious Bujjingo from the House of Prayer Ministry and the unfortunate killing of his bodyguard, Muhumuza Richard,” said Owoyesigire.
“At approximately 9 PM on January 2nd, 2024, unidentified assailants opened fire on Pastor Bujjingo’s vehicle, registered as PRAIZ GOD, along Namungona, Zone 2, Kasubi, Rubaga Division, Kampala at Bwalakata Junction along National Housing Road, before swiftly escaping the scene on a motorcycle.”
Bujjingo survived with injuries. According to Owoyesigire, Bujjingo drove the car to Mulago National Referral Hospital. The pastor is being treated at the hospital.
“Despite sustaining injuries during the attack, Pastor Aloysious Bujjingo managed to transport the vehicle to Mulago Hospital. Regrettably, his bodyguard, Muhumuza Richard, succumbed to the assault and was confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital. Currently, Pastor Bujjingo is undergoing medical treatment and is under close monitoring,” added the KMP police publicist.
Police said it was examining CCTV footage and piecing together evidence using eyewitness accounts.
“Upon an immediate response to the incident, the police discovered that the scene had been tampered with. Statements from eyewitnesses have been diligently recorded, and the deceased’s body has been conveyed to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a thorough postmortem examination. In our active pursuit of justice, we are thoroughly reviewing CCTV footage to identify the assailants. Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.”
