Ugandan MPs have adopted the motion for a resolution of parliament to pay special tribute to Jacob L’Okori Oulanyah, the late former speaker of the 11th Parliament.
The motion was adopted with an amendment to declare every March 23 as a memorial day to honour the late Oulanyah.
Vice President Jessica Alupo agreed to the proposal by Pian County MP Remigio Achia to have a memorial day to honour the former speaker.
Earlier in the morning on April 05, VP Alupo had moved a motion to take cognizance of the excellent and patriotic service that Oulanyah rendered to Parliament, the Acholi region and the people of Uganda.
“He was a dedicated speaker who served his country and Parliament with with devotion and enthusiasm, and his leadership greatly contributed to strengthening of adherence to the rule of law, Parliamentary practice, political tolerance, the spirit of humanity ‘Ubuntu’ and encouraged cohesion amongst different shades of opinion,” Alupo said of Oulanyah.
Alupo also noted that Oulanyah was instrumental in the construction of a cancer institute in Omoro District. “I urge the Ministry of Health to ensure that the cancer institute is completed in honour of Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah,” said the VP.
