A top member of first son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s MK Movement has claimed that the political group has received reliable leaked information that tens of MPs and ministers of President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) are planning to endorse him as a sole candidate for the 2026 presidential election.
In power for nearly four decades now, Museveni will turn 79 this year. He has not yet come clear on his plan for the 2026 presidential election. His son Gen Kainerugaba, a serving officer of the national army, the UPDF, has expressed interest in succeeding his elderly father.
Gen Kainerugaba’s MK Movement has now expressed worry that the ongoing retreat of the NRM parliamentary caucus intends to endorse Museveni for the next poll.
The loose political movement’s deputy spokesperson, Kashambya MP David Kabanda – himself a member of the NRM – has described the MPs and ministers plotting to endorse Museveni for 2026 as self-seekers.
“We have just been reliably informed that a group of 30 self-seekers (MPs) are converging at Kyankwanzi to endorse President Museveni tomorrow [today June 04, 2023) as a sole candidate for the 2026 elections. We know some of them are targeting ministerial positions while the others want to retain their ministerial positions,” claimed Kabanda on Saturday.
At about 3pm on Sunday, June 4, 2023, State House confirmed that President Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni had departed from the National Leadership Institute (NALI), Kyankwanzi to Ngoma in Nakaseke District for the final activities of the NRM Caucus retreat.
IS THIS CAP A SIGN OF SOMETHING TO COME?

As The Pearl Times observed via its Twitter account, the first lady, holding hands with the president, donned a cap with Museveni’s image. Is this a pointer to the imminent endorsement that Kabanda is alleging?
A few months ago, Gen Muhoozi said he was tired of waiting forever, telling his father to give way so that he can take over the presidency. (Read Story Here).
Weeks later, Museveni met Muhoozi and his team and somehow appeared like he had endorsed MK Movement, a political group headed by his son, one his most powerful and feared advisors. (See Details Here and There).
