Deputy speaker Anita Among has threatened to name and shame male MPs who dump and neglect children sired from affairs with girls and women outside their official marriages.
On December 01, Parliament debated Vice President Jessica Alupo’s statement on the National Campaign against Defilement, Early Marriages and Failed Parenthood.
Tororo District Woman MP Sarah Opendi said she had heard of a mother who had stormed Parliament after a male MP she didn’t name impregnated and abandoned her [the woman that stormed Parliament].
“Today [On Wednesday], I was informed of young a mother that came here with a child of six months whose father is one of us [MPs] here and has failed to take responsibility of the child,” said Opendi.
“Can we be role models as we speak about the aspect of parenthood?”
Deputy Speaker Among said she was tired of counselling women abandoned by male MPs.
“I am tired of counselling women here; women come here with children. It is the MPs who impregnate these girls and abandon these them,” said Among.
“Just imagine this girl is your daughter, someone impregnates here and refuses to take care?”
Among’s statement sparked murmurs in the House.
“If MPs don’t want to believe this, I will start naming the culprits,” added Among.
The National Campaign against Defilement, Early Marriages and Failed Parenthood will be launched ON Friday, December 03, 2021 at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.
