Learners in the semi-candidate classes of Primary Six and Senior Three can sit this year’s Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) and Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), respectively, the education ministry has announced.
Due to the Covid19 pandemic and its resultant pandemics, learners missed almost two years of learning.
The Ministry of Education and Sports allowed all pupils and students to skip one class.
What this means is that those who were in P5 by the time the first lockdown was declared in March 2020 are now in P6, yet they should be in P7, and therefore candidates getting ready for PLE.
This is the same case for students in Senior Two in 2020. While these should, under the normal calendar, be in S4, they were promoted to S3.
Janet Museveni, the Minister of Education and Sports, has now reportedly okayed a move to allow P6 and S3 semi-candidates to sit national exams.
But the Minister is said to have insisted that semi-candidates who want to sit PLE and UCE must exhibit academic capability to sit and pass the exams as their counterparts in candidate classes.
This might mean more numbers for assessment body Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) and examination centers.
The education ministry is expected to release guidelines on the criteria and guidelines for the registration of the semi-candidates.
Meanwhile, Uneb has already announced dates for registration and sitting of PLE, UCE and UACE exams. (Read Story Here).
