The inaugural Sevo Cup tournament has reached the quarter finals, with Owino Market Football Club booking a spot in this stage.
As part of promoting unity among traders in the public markets under Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), a group of leaders headed by Owino Market Chairperson Suzan Kushaba organized the Sevo Cup tournament, named after Uganda’s President and ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party chairman Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni.
Starting a few weeks ago, Sevo Cup tournament has attracted football and netball teams from at least 16 public markets. These teams are already putting up exciting performances and making a statement to sports lovers on how much talent and skill are in the markets.
In its opening game at the Phillip Omondi Stadium Lugogo, Owino Market played Lufula FC, also from Group A which comprises Kalerwe and Nateete Markets. Both teams (Owino and Lufula) shared the spoils, drawing 1:1 in a thrilling match that attracted thousands of football enthusiasts.
After that draw with Lufula FC, Owino Market FC proceeded to register its first win in the Sevo Cup tournament, beating Nateete FC 2:0 at a game played at Nakivubo Blue Primary School the following week.
Owino Market’s celebration were further boosted by the Netball Team which also posted good results after beating their Nateete counterparts 31:18 at Nakivubo Blue Primary School on the same day.
Following last week’s encouraging performance, Owino Market’s sports teams continued with their winning streak on Friday, September 09, 2022, beating football and netball teams from Kisekka Market. The wins from Friday’s games mean that Owino Market teams have now progressed to the next stage of the Sevo Cup tournament: the quarter finals.
Owino Market FC beat Kisekka Market FC 1:0 in a game played at Buganda Road Primary School pitch while Owino Market’s Netball Team hammered Kisekka Market’s 42:23. Kisekka Market’s journey in this tournament ended with yesterday’s wins by Owino.
Owino Market teams will now play other teams for a spot in the next stage of the tournament: the semi-finals. The next stages are expected to be more competitive as teams battle it out for Sevo Cup.
The tournament is being sponsored by KCCA, whose Executive Director is Dorothy Kisaka. The city authority offered pitches, medical equipment and ambulances that are being used in the games. Other sponsors include Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s Team Chairman which has donated foot balls and jerseys.
According to the official schedule, the final games will take place on September 25. The winning netball team will take home a coaster while the best football team will win a bus. Top government and NRM officials are expected to grace the final games.
