Speaker of Parliament of Uganda Anita Annet Among has summoned information minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi to come to the House and explained to MPs and the entire country what exactly happened last Thursday when government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo charged at Erias Lukwago, the Kampala Lord Mayor and opposition vice president for Central Uganda.
During today’s plenary sitting Mityana District Woman MP Joyce Bagala Ntwatwa of the National Unity Platform (NUP) raised a matter of national importance regarding the manner in which Ofwono Opondo treated Lord Mayor Lukwago during a live talk show.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja seemed unaware that the event even happened, insisting she was busy in the field and did not watch the show and that she was yet to learn about the matter.
Leader of Opposition in Parliament Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba wondered why PM Nabbanja and her NRM government were reportedly attempting to sweep the matter under the carpet and not giving it the attention it deserves.
Mpuuga, who is also the Nyendo-Mukungwe MP and NUP Vice President for Central Uganda, argued that the manner in which the lord mayor of the country’s capital city should be of great concern to the government, which should have already taken action against Ofwono Opondo, a man who speaks for the government.
In the end, Speaker Among summoned minister Baryomunsi to come to the House and explain what happened. Among predicted that what happened to Lukwago could happen to anyone else.
“Let the Minister of ICT come to the House and report to us what could have happened. Of course, it is regrettable; today it has happened to Lukwago and tomorrow it could happen to another person,” said Among.
