Makerere University councillor Doreen Nyanjura is the new Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) deputy lord mayor.
Nyanjura replaces Makindye East Councillor Sarah Kanyike who had held the position of deputy lord mayor since 2016.
Recently, President Yoweri Museveni nominated Kanyike as director for gender, community services and production.
In the new changes announced to clean up KCCA, Museveni also picked Dorothy Kisaka to the City Authority.
Kisaka, hitherto Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda’s governance advisor, will replace acting Executive Director (ED) Eng Andrew Kitaka.
Once the Public Service Commission approves the nominees Eng David Luyimbazi Ssali will deputise Kisaka, ending Sam Sserunkuma reign as acting deputy KCCA ED.
Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago had advised Kanyike to decline Museveni’s appointment.
But the Democratic Party member parted ways with Lukwago by tendering in her resignation.
For years now, Lukwago has remained the thorn in Museveni’s flesh as the president moves to win Kampala from his political opposition.
Lukwago is an ally to Dr Kizza Besigye, Uganda’s main opposition leader and Museveni’s fiercest critic for almost two decades.
In fact, Lukwago is Dr Besigye’s deputy at the parallel People’s Government (PG).
The four-time presidential candidate rejected the 2016 poll results and swore himself in as president.
On June 18, Lukwago announced Nyanjura’s appointment at City Hall in Kampala. Nyanjura is also a member of Besigye’s PG.
Also, both Besigye and Nyanjura belong to the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Uganda’s largest opposition political party.
Lukwago said “there were many other qualified people but there will always be that one person who stands out.”
And that person was Nyanjura.
She has risen from serving in different capacities at Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest and largest higher learning institution.
She was the Makerere FDC Chapter’s secretary general and served as deputy guild president before becoming KCCA Councillor.
In almost three months, Lukwago has handed Nyanjura two juicy appointments.
Days after she lost the KCCA speaker election to fellow FDC member Abubaker Kawalya in March, Nyanjura breathed a sigh of relief.
Lukwago appointed her Executive Committee Minister of Finance and Administration.
