Masaka High Court has granted bail to MPs Allan Ssewanyana of Makindye West and Muhammad Ssegirinya of Kawempe North, ending their incanceration that has lasted for nearly one and a half years.
Behind bars since September 2021 on murder charges, legislators Ssewanyana and Ssegirinya were granted Shs20m Cash bail, each, by the Masaka high Court.
Earlier, Court presided over by Justice Lawrence Tweyanze heard that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had withdrawn three affidavits in which the state had relied on to punch holes in the legislators’ bail applications.
Senior State Resident Attorney Richard Birivumbuka told court that the affidavits which the state had withdrawn had been sworn by Thomas Jatiko, Jennifer Amumpaire and Detective SP Innocent Mubangizi. The withdrawal of the affidavits had been submitted on January 23, 2023.
Among others, the affidavits touched on allegations that the two legislators had a hand in the murder of a one Joseph Bwanika, a resident of Kankamba village, Kisekka B in Lwengo District.
