NRM Primaries: Kigulu South MP Aspirant dead on polling day

Ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has postponed the Kigulu South election after Stephen Waako, one of the candidates in the race, passed on.

Medics in a Jinja-based hospital pronounced Waako dead at about 5am on September 04 after he was admitted with injuries from an accident.

The accident happened on September 03 as Waako travelled to Jinja.

The race for Kigulu South (in Iganga District) representative had also attracted incumbent legislator Andrew Kuluya and former area MP Milton Muwuma.

The party has since called off the election and a new polling date is yet to be communicated.

Kigulu South is the third constituency in which the Dr Fred Tanga Odoi NRM Electoral Commission (EC) has postponed the primaries.

In Sembabule’s Mawogola North and Mawogola West, the EC called off the elections over violence.

In Mawogola West the race is heated between Anifa Bangirana Kawooya and Joseph Ssekabito.

But violence there saw Kawooya sustain injuries, prompting Tanga Odoi to postpone the election.

Odoi said the NRM would investigate the cause of the violence, and also wait for Kawooya to heal from her injuries before another date can be set.

Ssekabito’s supporters at Ntete Trading Centre in Nakasenyi Sub County protested the postponement, alleging that security was conniving with district electoral officers to give Kawooya an edge.

There has also been violence in Mawogola North, making the Tanga Odoi commission suspend the poll.

The race is reportedly tight between President Museveni’s relative Godfrey Kaguta Aine Sodo and foreign affairs minister Sam Kahamba Kutesa’s daughter Shartis Nayebare Musherure.
