Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze can now feel relieved after clarification on Lt Gen Proscovia Nalweyiso’s daughter Gloria Namubiru’s rumored Mukono Municipality MP candidature.
Reports had emerged that Namubiru had thrown her hat in the ring for the Mukono Municipality seat that Democratic Party’s Nambooze has occupied for 10 years.
The Pearl Times has learnt that some members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) had been urging Namubiru to challenge Nambooze.
The Mukono NRM mobilisers had hoped that Namubiru would use her mother’s influence to knock out Nambooze, also spokesperson of Dr Kizza Besigye’s People’s Government (PG).
But the daughter of the highest ranking female UPDF officer had declined, choosing to concentrate on her hardware business.
Nalweyiso is President Yoweri Museveni’s advisor on security and defence, and also a trusted NRM cadre.
NRM’s Office of the National Chairman (ONC) spokesperson Faruk Kirunda told this reporter both Nalweyiso and Namubiru had confirmed that the latter is not contesting.
“She has not told anyone that she is interested. Even her mother, Lt Gen Nalweyiso, has not asked her to contest. In fact, they are both against the idea,” Kirunda in a telephone conversation with The Pearl Times.
“Despite the goodwill, the move is irregular as nobody should be cajoled to contest for any position. Rather, willing contenders emerge on their own and party members vote on them to choose the best.”
The NRM has already released its road map for party primaries.
But Kirunda warned that Namubiru’s disinterest in the race should not make Nambooze and opposition in Mukono over celebrate, saying the party is determined to win the parliamentary seat.
This publication has also learnt that NRM cadres in Mukono are on a continuous search for a candidate to challenge the DP stalwart who will be seeking to extend her reign for another five-year term.
