A group of notorious and illegal drug dealers has been netted in the capital Kampala, medicines regulator National Drug Authority (NDA) has said.

NDA, a government agency responsible for the promotion and protection of public health through effective regulation of human, animal medicines and healthcare products, says the gang of six was arrested in Nabulagala in Kasubi Kampala.

The authority identified the arrested gang leader as Francis Hafishimana, a man they described as “notorious.”

Hafishimana was arrested alongside six others who are believed to have been working with him.

During the operation, the NDA enforcement team recovered a number of forged documents and Government of Uganda drugs which are supposed to be dispensed out to patients in health centres free of charge.

“We have arrested a notorious illegal drug dealer Francis Hafishimana and his other six accomplices in Nabulagala, Kasubi, Kampala. These were found in possession of classified medicines, GoU drugs, drug labels, forged documents of NDA, Pharmaceutical Society and Medical Council,” read NDA’s statement in part.

The National Drug Authority says it has now handed over Hafishimana and his accomplices to Uganda Police Force ahead of their arraignment in courts of law for possible prosecution on a number of charges, including unlawful possession of classified drugs contrary to section 27(2) of National Drug Policy and Authority Act; unlawful possession of government stores; forgery, and uttering false documents.
