Former Ethics and Integrity Minister Miria Koburunga Matembe says she has reports that Democratic Party (DP) president general and newly appointed Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao is the man supposed to become vice president of the rumored ‘incoming’ government of Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Reports of Lt Gen Kainerugaba’s so-called Muhoozi Presidential Project have taken centre stage in recent months as the first son celebrated his 48 birthday by holding several parties across the country. During these parties, President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s son made speeches about uplifting the youths while his supporters urged him to run for president in 2026.
The highlight of Kainerugaba was a dinner hosted in his honor at State House Entebbe and attended by Rwandan President ‘Uncle’ Paul Kagame. The first son, who is also the Commander of the UPDF Land Forces, then went on a tweeting spree, making political statements on his presidential bid and sometimes contradicting official government positions on international security and diplomacy.
Now, ex-minister Matembe says she heard reports that Kainerugaba’s vice president is supposed to Norbert Mao.
Armed with this rumor, Matembe says she was not shocked when Mao signed a cooperation agreement with Museveni and consequently accepted an appointment as justice and constitutional affairs minister. She went on to argue that the latest developments point to the rumored Muhoozi Project.
“I am not surprised. I had heard earlier that Mao is supposed to be the Vice President of the ‘MK Project,’ so I said, eh! is that so? So I waited to see,” Matembe told NBS Frontline.
“When they announced him as the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, I said, eh! The project is taking shape.”
It should be remembered that months before Norbert Mao signed a cooperation agreement with Museveni and was appointed minister, first son Muhoozi had praised the DP leader (Mao) as the best opposition leader with potential to succeed Museveni, praises which Mao responded to calling Muhoozi a prophet.
