Norbert Mao: I Trust Museveni

Democratic Party (DP) President General and newly appointed Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao says he trusts ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairman President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni.

Last week, Mao led his DP to sign a cooperation agreement with Museveni and his NRM following a meeting attended by the two political parties’ secretaries general at State House Entebbe.

Museveni would later announce that he has appointed Mao the new Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister. Mao has since been vetted and approved by Parliament’s Appointments Committee and is set to be sworn in as a Minister on Museveni’s huge cabinet.

But a number of people have been warning Mao that Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, cannot be trusted since he has even lied about about when he would retire only to change his mind and cling on.

In response, Mao has denied being untrustworthy, adding that the only way one can prove Museveni’s trustworthiness is by choosing to partner with him and see if he can keep his promises and commitments.

He noted that the Democratic Party has chosen to trust Museveni and his NRM and will watch and see who betrays the other.

“People are saying I am not trustworthy. I want them to ask President Museveni about that. The only way to know if President Museveni is trustworthy is to trust him,” Mao told NBS Faceoff.

“We have decided to put our trust in President Museveni. It’s up to him to betray us. He has also put his trust in us. It’s up to us to betray him. It is our duty to keep President Museveni focused. If he is to betray, he will be betraying Uganda, not Norbert Mao.”

Meanwhile, Mao has reiterated his earlier stance that he is still in charge of DP in his capacity as the President General despite accepting to work with Museveni. (Read Story Here).
