‘No Need for Anita Among to Resign Deputy Speaker Job if She Wants to Replace Late Speaker Jacob Oulanyah’ – Parliament

Parliament’s director of communication and public affairs, Chris Obore, says deputy speaker Anita Annet Among doesn’t need to resign her current position if she is interest in replacing late speaker Jacob Oulanyah.

On March 20, President Museveni announced that Speaker Oulanyah has died. (Read Story Here).

As we reported earlier, no parliamentary business can take place other than the election of the speaker if the position falls vacant. (Read Story Here).

Cabinet has now set a date for the election of a new speaker to replace Oulanyah. (Read Story Here).

Hours after the announcement of election date, Anita Among reportedly expressed interest in replacing the late Oulanyah as speaker. (Read Story Here).

There were also reports that Among had resigned her speaker job.

Contrary to reports that Among, the Bukedea District Woman MP, had tendered in her resignation as deputy speaker to vie for Parliament’s top job, Obore said clerk to parliament Adolf Kasaija Mwesige was yet to receive Among’s letter.

Obore said Among is not required to resign her job to be eligible for speakership. But members of cabinet must quit their current jobs if they are interested in running for speaker.

“The Clerk to Parliament has not received any resignation from the Deputy Speaker Anita Annet Among,” said Obore.

“And there is no legal requirement for her to resign if she needs to vie for position of Speaker. It’s members of Cabinet that the law commands to resign first.”
