NEW TWIST IN MABAATI SAGA as Museveni Ministers are Ordered to Return ‘Stolen’ Karamoja Iron Sheets

All the top government officials named in the Karamoja iron sheets scandal have been directed to return the mabaati as investigations into the diversion of relief items continue.

Vice President Jessica Alupo, Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and a number of top ministers have all been named in the mabaati scandal.

Parliament is investigating the diversion and has since interfaced with a number of government officials including VP Alupo who has told the presidential affairs committee that she insisted that the iron sheets should not be taken to her home.

PM Nabbanja has also told the committee that the iron sheets that she used were not meant for Karamoja but for other affirmative action programs.

Nabbanja, who doubles as the Kakumiro District Woman MP, also acknowledged that she was aware that some people were stuck with the iron sheets after the public learnt of the diversion and began labelling these top officials ‘thieves.’

She advised them to return the iron sheets to the Office of the Prime Minister. But while some people like Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga confirmed receiving the iron sheets, they swore that they have already donated them to their constituents. (Read related Story Here).

In one of the previous interfaces with top government officials who received Karamoja iron sheets, Finance Minister Matia Kasaija told MPs to kill him if they want, swearing that he does not know how iron sheets got into his compound. (See Details Here).

It should also be remembered that PM Nabbanja had to come out and clear the air on reports that she had used Karamoja iron sheets to roof her hotels. (Read Story Here).

All this comes at a time when those named in the Karamoja iron sheets scandal are panicking after Dr Mary Goretti Kitutu Kimono, the Minister of Karamoja Affairs, was arrested, detained and produced in court.

On Thursday, April 06, donning a ‘veil of shame,’ Minister Kitutu appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court and was formally charged and remanded to Luzira Prison, meaning that she will spend her Easter holiday behind bars. (See Details Here and There).

Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Court has issued criminal summons against Minister Kitutu’s assistant.
