NARROW ESCAPE: Shock as Museveni Minister Survives Being Punched by Angry ‘Makerere Professor’

There was drama at the Uganda Media Centre as one of President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s senior ministers survived being punched by an angry man claiming to be a professor from Makerere University.

Matia Kasaija, the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (Mofped), had come to the Uganda Media Centre to brief Ugandans about the launch of the National Budget Month. In attendance at the briefing were top officials from the Finance ministry, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), and African Development Bank, among others.

But a man who insisted he was a professor from Makerere University, Uganda’s premier higher learning institution, rose and attempted to attack him on the podium from which he was addressing reporters.

The man, who has since been identified as Vincent Nuwagaba, also sought to grab the microphone from the finance minister. Aged 40 and a resident of Kamabare Village, Kigarama Parish in the Western Uganda district of Mitooma, Nuwagaba asked Kasaija what he was talking about and what ‘budget’ means.

The minister tried to reason with Nuwagaba, who insisted he was a professor, to be civil and sit down but he refused, and told Kasaija he should be the one to sit down, since, according to him (the so-called ‘professor) the minister was junior to him.

The perplexed minister then requested him to sit down as journalists and officials from the Finance ministry, Uganda Revenue Authority, African Development Bank and the civil society, and the director of Uganda Media Centre Ofwono Opondo looked on in shock. Nuwagaba was later taken away from the podium by staff and security at the Media Center. Kasaija pleaded that the man be forgiven, and mocked him, saying: “For sure, you are superior; don’t worry, professor.”
