Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze says she is not interested in becoming the leader of opposition in Parliament.
Nambooze is one of the few seasoned members of Parliament in the National Unity Platform (NUP), the country’s main opposition party.
Some reports have claimed she was already seeking the party’s support to replace Betty Aol Ocan of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) as LoP.
Other press reports claimed she had even started wooing top party leaders for their blessing.
Nambooze says she is aware of these reports.
“I have seen one of the not so credible Luganda Newspapers listing me among people fighting to become the Leader of Opposition in the 11th Parliament,” noted Nambooze.
“And that because of that I, among others, have put the NUP party Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya together with the NUP-Principal on tenterhooks as we fight for these positions.”
She says she is not enthusiastic about the leader of opposition in Parliament job as she is about becoming the leader of government business.
“I have and don’t hope I will be among those campaigning or lobbying to be given a leadership position in Parliament while the will of the people is trodden on,” says the MP.
“I don’t want to be the Leader of opposition; I instead want to be the Leader of Goverment business when we have taken power.”
Nambooze also cautioned NUP members on choice of leaders in Parliament.
“And if we are to strategically settle for providing Ugandans an alternative government, then it should be worked out by serious and knowledgeable people on who deserves to serve in these positions,” she advises.
“It shouldn’t be through manouvers, lobbying or buying one’s way to Office.”
