Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze has spoken out on her relationship with main opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye’s People’s Government (PG) after she joined Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) party.
Nambooze joined other Democratic Party (DP) politicians from Buganda sub-region that crossed to NUP on August 13.
Others were Joseph Ssewungu, Moses Kasibante, Allan Sewanyana, Matiya Lwanga Bwanika. Medard Seggona, Muwanga Kivumbi, and Florence Namayanja.
The list also included Matiya Lwanga Bwanika, Muwadda Nkunyinji, Sulaimani Kidandala, Vicent Mayanja, Muhammad Kawuma, Abed Bwanika, Mike Mabikke, Tebusweke David Mayinja, Lubega Muakaku, and Angella Kigonya.
Others who officially crossed to NUP included Wakayima Musoke, Henry Lubowa, Abbey Musoke, Julius Mutebi, Shafick Lubega, Juliet Kakande, Mohammad Kawuma and Immaculate Nalwadda.
MP Nambooze is the spokesperson of Besigye’s People’s Government, while MPs Ssewanyana and Kasibante are cabinet members.
But Nambooze says she sees no contradiction in being a NUP member and still remain the PG publicist.
“The People’s Government is not an electoral platform. I remain the Spokesperson of the People’s Government until further notice,” Nambooze told NBS Frontline.
“I shall continue to carry out my duties as a member of NUP.”
Besigye formed PG after the 2016 Presidential election which he and his Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) claimed they won.
PG had drawn members from across the opposition divide.
Nambooze committed to support FDC’s Erias Lukwago for Kampala Lord may and reiterated it was unlikely Besigye would contest again.
“We have two groups in Uganda, one for the status quo and one against the status quo. I will continue supporting the most promising opposition candidate,” she said.
“We have been supporting Besigye because he has been the most promising candidate.”
