Nabilah Naggayi applies for NUP flag to unseat FDC’s Lukwago in Kampala Lord Mayor Election

Kampala Woman MP Nabilah Naggayi Sempala has thrown her hat in the ring for National Unity Platform (NUP) race for Kampala Mayoral flag bearer.

Naggayi whose quest for the flag of main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party failed now wants the NUP flag.

Her brother-in-law Latif Ssebagala, the Kawempe North MP, recently declined the NUP flag.

The party had rejected singer Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleone.

Chameleone protested, arguing that Ssebagala had pulled out of the race on September 18.

“Please recall that by close of September 18, your record indicates that I was unopposed by the fact that my fellow competitor All-Hajj Latif Ssebagala had withdrawn his candidature in a letter already in your possession and in the public domain,” Chameleone wrote to the Mercy Walukamba Election Management Committee on September 20.

“By the foregoing, I am the unopposed NUP candidate for the position of Lord Mayor Kampala city.”

With Ssebagala out, the party’s Election Management Committee, announced a fresh nomination exercise for the position.

On September 25, Naggayi and Kuruda Ssali have filled and returned expression of interest forms.

Vetting will happen on September 26.

STATEMENT: NABILAH NAGGAYI ANNOUNCES BID FOR KAMPALA LORD MAYOR

Friends and supporters,

After the 2016 General Elections, I made the decision to run for Kampala Lord Mayor.

You will recall that I attempted to run under my former party, FDC but I was blocked very unfairly. I then decided to run independent.

As everyone knows, I have been on record for over two years now, supporting the candidature of Hon. Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert for President because I believe that he represents something new in our struggle to liberate Uganda. That is in part why I joined NUP as a member a few days ago.

Earlier today I took another step. Following the reopening of nominations for the position of Lord Mayor by the National Unity Platform, I decided to fill the Expression of Interest forms   and I will be presenting myself before the Committee for vetting.

I am hopeful and reinvigorated! A new dawn for Kampala is in sight.
