Nabbanja: A Drunkard Shouldn’t Be Uganda’s President

The race to succeed Uganda’s long-serving leader President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni is on. And Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has a message about the need for sobriety in the mind of anyone hoping to replace the country’s 77-year-old president who has ruled since 1986.

First son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine are some of the people interested in the country’s highest office that Museveni will have occupied for four decades by the end of his current five-year term in 2026.

Speaking recently during the launch of the free Covid19 vaccination drive for the private sector at Vaccine  Access Initiative (VAI) initiative in Ntinda, Kampala, PM Nabbanja said from her experience with the way President Museveni runs the country, she has learnt that a drunkard would not manage Uganda.

Nabbanja says Museveni, who has severally made it clear that he does not take alcohol, has been able to make timely and sound decisions to steer the country forward for almost four decades because he is sober 24/7.

“This country needs a president who is always sober 24 hours. I have been near the fire these days; you do not need a president who is not sober 24 hours,” said Nabbanja, without mentioning names of people who are not sober but want to rule Uganda.

However, some people have since put names into Nabbanja’s mouth, saying she was sending a message to two presidential hopefuls: Bobi Wine and Muhoozi. Bobi Wine was known to smoke weed and drink. The first son’s critics such as members of Bobi Wine’s camp have accused him of drinking.

In a recent Twitter war between Museveni’s son and former army commander Maj Gen (Rtd) Gregg Mugisha Muntu, the issue of Muhoozi’s sobriety came up. Muntu told Muhoozi to sober up, and write correct English after the first son ‘murdered’ the Queen’s Language, and failed to comprehend the former army commander’s advice, at least according to Muntu.
