Two Ugandan opposition MPs have alleged that President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni is plotting to make his son and senior advisor on special duties Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba leader of opposition in Parliament in 2026.
Both hailing from opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s Buganda sub-region, Joseph Ssewungu Gonzaga of Kalungu West, one of the MPs to main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), and Yusuf Nsibambi of Mawokota South, a member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), agree there could be a plan by Museveni to ensure that the newly inaugurated Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) eclipses NUP as the main opposition party and Muhoozi becomes opposition leader.
The argument by Ssewungu and Nsibambi adds a new twist on the Museveni-Muhoozi succession, becoming just one of the many ways the elderly long-serving president is expected to bequeath power to his son.
Ssewungu says it would be a huge punishment for God to allow Gen Muhoozi succeed his father who has ruled the impoverished East African nation for nearly four decades since he took over power after a five-year bush war that killed hundreds of thousands of Ugandans.
But the MP suspects there is a plot for Museveni to make his son Muhoozi and his PLU political movement – now disguised a civic organization – the leader of opposition in parliament and the main opposition party.
“Uganda has really suffered. The biggest punishment God can give Uganda is for Museveni’s son to rule us. But I swear God can’t commit that mistake,” Ssewungu told CBS.
“The child forms a party and his father is in another party. He thinks that when his son forms a political party. He will have some MPs in Parliament. Some will join the son’s party. He will have about 200 MPs, his father 300, leaving the opposition with nothing [or a few]. Then they will have government and the leader of opposition in Parliament.”
Ssewungu’s opposition colleague Nsibambi expressed worries that the opposition who are already outnumbered are fighting each other. “If we don’t address these issues squarely, the young man [Muhoozi] will come and he will become leader of opposition.”
It should be remembered that weeks ago, Museveni smartly paused Muhoozi’s 2026 presidential ambition. (See Details Here).
Museveni’s bush war comrades, including internal affairs minister Maj Gen (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire, have vehemently opposed Muhoozi’s presidential ambitions. (Read Story Here).
Meanwhile, a prophet has claimed to know the person God has chosen to replace Museveni. (See Details Here).
