Government is set to spend millions of Ugandan Shillings to fly Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze Bakireke of Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) abroad for specialized treatment.
Nambooze, who previously belonged to Norbert Mao’s Democratic Party (DP), has been in and out of hospital since 2017 when she sustained spine injuries in the chaos that ensued in the 10th Parliament over the age limit debate.
Recently, Nambooze fell off stairs and was hospitalized. When she visited her together with her ‘friend’ Moses Magogo at Rubaga Hospital in Kampala hours after the State of Nation Address on June 07, Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among said that the legislative arm of government would do everything possible to ensure that Nambooze is supported to recover.
“I also assured her of our support to ensure that she gets proper medical attention. I have asked the medical team to give us the necessary documentation to support the process,” said Speaker Among, who is also the Bukedea District Woman MP.
“We shall do whatever it takes to support our Sister’s recovery process. We pray for her and her family during this difficult moment.”
Now, days after the visit, it has emerged that Parliament has already completed the process to fly Nambooze abroad, with the institution only waiting for the vocal NUP MP’s family to decide on when she should be taken outside the country for better treatment.
Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige has been quoted as telling government-owned daily, The New Vision, as saying that as a member of parliament that Nambooze is entitled to special medical treatment.
Mwesige also revealed that Nambooze would be treated in the US. The legislator was previously treated at Manipal Hospital in India after being diagnosed with spinal compression.
It should be remembered that while MPs are entitled to special medical treatment, Bobi Wine’s NUP supporters held protests in the US after former speaker Jacob Oulanyah (RIP) was flown to America for treatment. (Read Story Here).
