President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has insisted on teachers, students and non-teaching staff being vaccinated before he can reopen schools and other education institutions.
In his July 30 address, Museveni extended the closure of schools pending full vaccination.
But UNICEF and health experts like Dr Kizza Besigye have urged Museveni to drop the vaccination condition and reopen.
After a series of meetings involving the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Ministry of Education and Sports, it has emerged that Museveni clearly stuck to his guns.
On August 16, education minister Janet Kataaha Museveni appealed to teachers, non-teaching staff and students above the age of 18 to get Covid19 vaccine jab.
Ms Museveni said vaccination remained a condition for reopening.
The minister urged school heads, local government authorities and staff associations to mobilize teachers, learners and non-teaching staff to go for Covid19 vaccine jabs.
“As the Ministry of Education and Sports, we have engaged with our sister Ministry, the Ministry of Health, to align our efforts towards getting teachers and learners above 18 years of age vaccinated,” she said.
She added that there were no approved and available vaccines for children aged 12 to 18 yet Museveni wanted these vaccinated too.
For now, those above 18 can get the jabs as those below 18 await an announcement from MoH.
Meanwhile, radio lessons resumed on August 16.
