President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has assured his Mozambican counterpart President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi of Uganda’s readiness to send UPDF soldiers to help fight terrorists in Mozambique.
President Nyusi is in the country on a state visit.
One of the matters disturbing the Mozambican leader is instability caused by Islamist insurgents in the Cabo Delgado Province of Mozambique.
The insurgents pay their allegiance to the Islamic State (IS).
Nyusi says the terrorists have made it a habit to attack villages in Northern Mozambique where they kill women and children using knives, clubs and machetes.
The president also accused the terrorists of burning villages, kidnapping young people and radicalizing them.
With help from at least four African countries, Mozambique has been abled to respond well and Nyusi says the country he leads “is still together.”
The Mozambican president praised Museveni for his readiness to help when told him about the security matter while both attended an AU meeting in Ethiopia.
“President Museveni was the first person to volunteer to support us,” Nyusi said, adding that Uganda has continued to support Maputo with logistics “in a profound manner.”
For his part, Museveni promised to keep in touch and to send UPDF troops if there is need.
The president said it is “just a question of planning” and Uganda will send troops to Mozambique just like she has done in DR Congo.
Museveni also explained that he did not want to send a few UPDF soldiers to Mozambique.
Uganda currently has 6,000 troops in Somalia and 4,000 in DR Congo.
But Museveni is ready to deploy UPDF in Mozambique if there is need to.
