President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has lauded first son, also Commander Land Forces (CLF), Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and the entire UPDF for the successful design and manufacturing of Infantry Fighting Vehicle ‘Chui’.
According to CLF Lt Gen Kainerugaba, Chui (Kiswahili for Leopard) was “fully designed and manufactured in Uganda.”
President Museveni, the commander-in-chief of armed forces, commissioned Chui at a ceremony held at State House Entebbe.
After the event, Museveni praised the UPDF, for which his son is CLF.
He added that he was pleased that the army was now making vehicles instead of spending billions procuring cars.
“I am happy that you are towing this line. Uganda spends over $550 million each year on importing vehicles from Japan and Europe,” said Museveni.
“All the money we get from selling coffee, which is about $500 million, goes back to Europe through the importation of vehicles. This must stop.”
Chui is the latest vehicle to be assembled in Uganda. It should be remembered that in 2018, Museveni commissioned the manufacturing and assembling of military Nyoka 4×4 mine and ballistic protected vehicles.
