President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the firing of police officers who failed to help ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters against persecution by Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP).
In his March 14 night address, Museveni claimed Bobi Wine’s NUP launched ‘vicious intimidation’ attempts against NRM supporters in the areas of Buganda, and Busoga.
He further said NUP members attacked NRM supporters in areas like Kampala, Mpigi, Wakiso and Kyotera — burning their homes and cars and razing their plantations.
Yet when NRM supporters reported, Museveni continued, the police could not help.
In one of his previous statements, Museveni singled out police officers in Kawempe for failing to help persecuted NRM supporters.
“At Katale in Kawempe, when NRM supporters went to complain to the Police about the intimidation by the opposition, they were told: ‘That is politics. We do not involve ourselves in politics!”
On March 14, Museveni claimed “Police had been bribed by the Kyagulanyi group not to intervene. They told NRM supporters, ‘if they [NUP] are disturbing you for putting on yellow, don’t put it on.”
He revealed that is why he directed the army to deploy and help crush those intimidating Ugandans.
The president has now threatened his government “shall go for those police officers.”
“They can’t remain in police nor can they be allowed in any public office. They abused their trust and are a disgrace.”
