Uganda’s President Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has spoken out on a resolution by Members of the European Union Parliament on oil projects in Uganda and Tanzania.

The European Parliament recently raised a red flag over human rights violations and environmental degradation around oil projects such as EACOP.

Parliament led by Deputy Speaker and Ruhinda North MP Thomas Tayebwa criticized the EU Parliament for seeking to meddle in the afrairs of a sovereign state.

Now Gen Museveni has praised DS Tayebwa and Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka for their commentary on the resolution.

“The remarks of the Deputy Speaker and the Attorney General in one of the dailies concerning the EU Parliament and EACOP interested me in making some comments of reassurance to our people,” said Museveni in a statement issued Friday evening.

The president assured Ugandans that the project will continue and that the first oil will come out by 2025.

He also said Uganda will find a replacement for TotalEnergies if the company listens to the EU Parliament.

“I want to assure you that the project shall proceed as stipulated in the contract we have with TotalEnergies and CNOOC,” noted Gen Museveni.

“We should remember that Total Energies convinced me about the Pipeline idea; if they choose to listen to the EU Parliament, we shall find someone else to work with. Either way, we shall have our oil coming out by 2025 as planned. So, the people of Uganda should not worry.”
