‘Museveni has appointed Beti Kamya to destroy IGG office’

Former ethics and integrity minister Miriam Koburunga Matembe has castigated President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni for appointing Beti Olive Namisango Kamya IGG as part of his alleged plot to destroy the Inspectorate of Government.

On July 15, Museveni named Kamya, a former Kampala minister and later minister of lands, housing and urban development, the new Inspector General of Government (IGG).

Kamya will replace Irene Mulyagonja who now sits on the Court of Appeal bench.

But Matembe says it was laughable that Museveni chose Kamya to become IGG.

Currently serving as the chairperson of the Citizens Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda (Ccedu), Matembe argued that Kamya lacked the integrity to become IGG given her questionable flipflopping across political parties.

A founder member of Reform Agenda that morphed into the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Kamya later founded Uganda Federal Alliance (UFA), before abandoning it to join Museveni’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

“The IGG has to be a person of unquestionable character,” Matembe told NTV Uganda in an interview.

“When I saw Beti Kamya’s appointment, I laughed. Surely President Museveni has managed to destroy the IGG’s office.”

She emphasized that as far as she is concerned, “Beti Kamya is not worthy of the position of IGG.”

The former minister also accused Museveni of fanning graft.

“President Museveni is deliberate about destroying the IGG institution because he loves and promotes corruption.”

She further claimed Museveni was using the law to destroy institutions in his favor, and compared him to former military ruler Idi Amin Dada.

“Nobody on this new team of Permanent secretaries [and advisors], has the courage to advise Museveni. All of them will just bow,” she predicted.

“President Museveni’s rule is equal to Idi Amin’s but hidden in the law which he breaks.”
