Museveni: City youths rejected Bobi Wine EC meeting chaos plot after security agencies crushed November protests

President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni says Kampala youths refused to be part of a plan by National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine to cause chaos on his way to Electoral Commission (EC) for a meeting.

On December 02, Bobi Wine met EC chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama over police brutality and chaos at his campaign rallies in Mukono and Kayunga.

But Museveni claims he had information that Bobi Wine had planned to cause chaos akin to what broke out during November 18 and 19 protests over his arrest in the district of Luuka, claiming 54 lives.

During a meeting with youth leaders of his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) from Busoga sub-region on December 04, Museveni said youths had avoided Bobi Wine for fear of apprehension.

He added that the handling of the Bobi Wine protests had taught youths lessons.

“You saw these people who had been manipulated by some groups [who] have actually been saying they are going to make Uganda ungovernable, that they are going to burn down Kampala. Well, they tried but they got the medicine, and I can tell you now that people know,” Museveni told the youth leaders that gathered in Jinja.

“So, the other day, this Bobi Wine was trying to make drama to go the Electoral Commission, but he went alone; nobody went with him because they now know. He had been hoping he would get groups to follow him to do damage. But all the bad people had got the message very clearly that [it’s only the bewitched who would accept to die for him].”

Uganda’s goes to the polls on January 14, 2021.

Museveni is facing 10 challengers, including Patrick Oboi Amuriat of main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Bobi Wine of NUP, Maj Gen (Rtd) Gregg Mugisha Muntu of Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), Lt Gen (Rtd) Henry Kakurugu Tumukunde of Renewed Uganda pressure group, and Norbert Mao of the Democratic Party (DP).

Others are: Nancy Kalembe, Joseph Kiiza Kabuleta, Willy Mayambala, Fred Mwesigye and John Katumba.
