National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s online campaign is expected to happen at almost the same time like incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s in what could be a clash between two media fronts: mainstream and social media.
Museveni’s address was pushed from November 22 to November 29 but singer-turned-politician Bobi Wine went on with his online campaign program.
But on November 29, Museveni and Bobi Wine will hold their addresses.
Museveni’s will be a national address, with the president seeking to reassure his countrymen and women of the state’s ability to provide securitby breaking up internal criminal groups and ward off foreign forces he believes are working with politicians like Bobi Wine and veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye to topple him.
On November 18 and 19, the military, police and auxillary forces quelled protests that followed the arrest of Bobi Wine in Luuka District.
In the process, over 45 people were killed, sparking off local and international condemnation against the Museveni administration.
Bobi Wine had flouted Ministry of Health (MoH) guidelines and Electoral Commission (EC) regulations barring mass rallies.
MoH had recommended a minimum of 200 participants per meeting.
But Bobi Wine has continued to hold rallies despite court caution.
In his 7pm address, the president is expected to emphasize why politicians should take observance of Covid19 prevention guidelines more seriously.
As head-of-state, Museveni could also issue orders, particularly in the area of Covid19 prevention and national security.
