Muntu’s Kamwenge campaign meeting blocked

Police in Kamwenge on November 25 blocked a campaign meeting Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential candidate Maj Gen (Rtd) Gregg Mugisha Muntu had planned to o hold in the district.

Unlike some presidential candidates, Muntu has often avoided confrontation with security agencies.

The former army commander also claimed a radio station they had booked for a show was under pressure to cancel their program.

After police blocked his meeting, Muntu said he would talk to the people of Kamwenge some time in the future.

“Commander Asiimwe DPC Kamwenge under ridiculous orders has frustrated our efforts to talk to the people who were eagerly waiting to hear our message,” Muntu said.

“The Radio station that we had made arrangements with has also been threatened not to host us. We shall definitely talk to the people of Kamwenge at one time.”

Other candidates who have recently had their meetings blocked or dispersed include: Patrick Oboi Amuriat of main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine of National Unity Platform (NUP), and independent candidate Lt Gen (Rtd) Henry Kakurugu Tumukunde.

These candidates have severally been accused of flouting Covid19 prevention guidelines and Electoral Commission (EC) regulations on campaigns.

Ministry of Health (MoH) has recommended meetings of not more than 200 people.

But some politicians and their mobilizers have held rallies of more than the recommended number.

On November 18, police arrested Amuriat and Bobi Wine for flouting the guidelines.

But the arrests sparked off protests in which over 45 were killed.
