Muhoozi Project: Andrew Mwenda ‘Endorses’ First Son Muhoozi Kainerugaba

Motor-mouthed veteran journalist Andrew Mujuni Mwenda of The Independent Magazine is a man who doesn’t mince his words or hide his convictions, and his support for first son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba is one of those issues he is passionate about.

Mwenda, an influential media personality that has worked for President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni and his rival Paul Kagame of Rwanda, may not have political ambitions but he is officially backing Kainerugaba.

In 2020, Mwenda shocked Ugandans when he registered as a member of Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) and, jokingly, sought to wrestle the party’s 2021 presidential election flag from the singer-turned-politician.

That was the farthest the knowledgeable political and economic commentator got as far as his political ambitions are concerned.

Mwenda has now joined voices, largely expressed on social media, who believe first son Lt Gen Kainerugaba, the commander land forces (CLF) is their generational leader.

The veteran journalist boldly donned a tshirt bearing Kainerugaba’s portrait with the words ‘THE LEADER.’

Kainerugaba shared the photo, praising his “friend and brother” for his sense of style.

“My friend and brother Mwenda never looked smarter than this. Finally he has good taste in his dress code,” wrote the first son.

It remains to be seen if the pro-Muhoozi group will push for his presidential candidature in 2026.

Five years from today, Muhoozi’s father President Museveni will have ruled Uganda for four decades, and will be aged 81.

Some voices in the ruling NRM party and government are pushing for what former spymaster Gen David Tinyefuuza Sejusa hinted on in 2013: The Muhoozi Project — an alleged plan aimed at clearing the way for Kainerugaba to succeed his father.

Both Kainerugaba and Museveni have denied presence of such a plot.

In 2020, the first son said his generation are turning the Muhoozi Project talk into a blessing.
